Biography

Micah Thompson is a young New Zealand composer with a distinctive artistic voice, and ear for sonority. Currently the 2020 Composer in residence for Australian ensemble Forest Collective, Micah is pursuing an honours degree in Composition and English Literature.

Micah’s music has been performed both internationally and nationally by a variety of ensembles and peers. In 2019 he was featured in the Bendigo International Festival of Exploratory Music where his piece Wake was premiered by the Argonaut Ensemble. In the same month the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra performed his piece Forgo the Parable, Seek the Light. In 2018 Micah was Awarded first prize in the New Zealand School of Music Composers Competition for his mixed chamber ensemble piece Whakamaru; Mist. His solo Flute piece Wash was featured in the same competition the following year. Micah’s music is also regularly performed within Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music.

A large focus of Micah’s work is a collaborative approach to composition based on ongoing relationships with performer colleagues/friends. Micah’s long stages of collaborative/exploratory sessions with musicians, often spanning multiple years, result in a focused and highly careful approach to sculptural instrumental composition.
