In association with the NZSO, RNZ Concert, SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music is proud to announce the selection for the latest 2023 NZ Composer Sessions. Seven New Zealand composers’ works will be rehearsed and performed by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and recorded by RNZ Concert in August:
Chris Adams: Acanthis: a winged canticle (mvt I)
Jacob Barrett: Countdown to Midnight at Carnaval
Chris Cree Brown: Double Violin Concerto (mvts II and III)
John Elmsly: Canonic Variations
Salina Fisher: Kintsugi
Alissa Long: Domino Effect
Karlo Margetić: In All Directions
“We are delighted to announce another strong and diverse selection for NZ Composer Sessions, which enables us to bring New Zealand music to a wider audience. We're looking forward to another set of high-quality recordings of contemporary New Zealand music, created with the support and generosity of our partners NZSO and RNZ Concert,” says SOUNZ Executive Director Diana Marsh.
A panel made up of representatives of the NZSO, RNZ Concert and the Composers Association of New Zealand (CANZ) selected the works to be recorded.
Jacob Barrett, from Wellington, whose work was selected to be recorded said, “Being selected for the 2023 NZ Composer Sessions has been a goal of mine for a while now, so I'm very excited to hear the NZSO bring their world class musicality and skill to recording my piece Countdown to Midnight at Carnaval (as well as the excellent works of my fellow NZ composers)!”
The 2023 recordings will take place in August at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington, including a concert for invited guests to promote the works to a range of orchestras and broadcasters. NZ Composer Sessions offers an opportunity to have orchestral compositions workshopped and performed by a professional orchestra, to be recorded in a professional setting and promoted to presenters. So far 175 works by 85 New Zealand composers have been recorded.
Chris Adams’s work will be also recorded: “The NZ Composer Sessions are a valuable and vital part of the annual calendar for composers. The opportunity to work with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and for the works to be recorded so that others are able to hear and see them is essential. I'm very much looking forward to hearing my piece performed by the NZSO.”
You can browse composers and listen to past recordings on SOUNZ’s and RNZ Concert’s websites.
