About
'Mokoia - The Love Legend of Hinemoa and Tutanekai' is an ensemble piece for stage performance by a traditional European chamber orchestra and taonga puoro. Based on the Māori love legend of Hinemoa and Tutanekai, it is divided into five sections: Hinemoa and Tutanekai confess their love to each other; the thwarting by Hinemoa's own clansmen; Hinemoa swims to Mokoia Island in the middle of Lake Rotorua, where Tutanekai lives, guided by his flute; Hinemoa and Tutanekai find each other on Mokoia Island; and finally, the lovers are united.
Multiple traditional Maori instruments including Tumutumu, Pukaea, Nguru, Karamu Leaf, Koauau, Putorino, Poi Awhiowhio, Rain Stick, Karanga Manu and Hue Puruhau are used for the variety of colour. The taonga puoro players would improvise their lines based on the instructions provided on the score to interact with traditional European instruments, and the melodic elements of the European ensemble are mostly derived from the aboriginal Maori songs. Extended techniques and avant-garde elements such as microtonalism and random pitches are also used, since these are the features that shared by the taonga puoro.
