Whānau Overture was commissioned by The Manukau Concert Band to celebrate their 50th anniversary, and to be performed during 2021, under conductor Tom Chester. The band is proud of its inclusive and community spirit, and the music endeavours to reflect that: it is upbeat and playful and contains dance rhythms, but also has a tone of determination. Prior to composing the piece, Anthony received a sheet of comments from band members, on what playing in the band meant to them. These comments informed the ideas in the music.
