Composed for the University of Canterbury MUSOC's 1975 production 'The Life and Works of Ivanich Hackernackeroff', a Russian composer who settled in Taranaki, New Zealand, before immigration records were properly kept. Surrealist Landscape was one of a handful of surviving works that also included Cantata for Taranaki Rugby Team, Composition for Choir with Laryngitis, Sonata for Four Cakemixers and the one-act comic operetta Pierrot Lunatic.
Surrealist Landscape is a musical portrayal of a 1942 poem by Lord Berners portraying a landscape painted by Salvador Dali, posters of which adorned many student flats in the 1970s.
This work is suitable for a proficient SATB choir able to divisi in places. Essentially diatonic, but with some chromatic challenges. Rhythmically relatively easy.
Poem (1942) by Gerald Hugh Tyrwhitt Berners also known as Lord Berners, the 14th Baron Berners 1883-1950. Text out of copyright.
