He Whakapapa (A History) is a pātere (chant) about the history of Aotearoa - New Zealand. Ngahiwi Apanui founder of seminal Māori reggae band Aotearoa under the name A.K (short for Apanui – Konia) recorded the song in 1989 at Radio New Zealand’s old Bowen Street studio using what he describes as a “cheap drum machine”.
