The Korotangi, or Korotau, is a stone bird carved in dark green serpentine, discovered in New Zealand a hundred years ago under the roots of a tree. It is believed to be of Asian origin and very ancient. Some claim that the Korotangi was brought here by the Tainui canoe from Hawaiiki, and it has long been venerated by the Maoris.
In 1995 the korotangi was returned to the Tainui people as part of the government settlement of their claims under the treaty of Waitangi.
