About

A cello is encircled by 8 kilometres of cotton, leaving only a diffuse and distorted outline of the instrument. A soundscape of aural gestures, created from digitally altered cello sounds, enable the instrument to adopt a persona. The expressive meaning of the work is obtained not only by obscuring the clarity of both the visual and aural aspects of the instrument, but also by removing any human causality, and (perhaps) allowing the cello itself to speak.

Commissioned note

Commissioned for the Art in Dunedin Festival and revised for exhibition in 1992 Sonic Circus and in the James Hight Library and the Fine Arts Gallery, at the University of Canterbury.
