Meet composer Kaaterama Pou

In this series, we present our new composers. We are proud to introduce Kaaterama Pou.

Please tell us about yourself and what you do.

I’m from Ngapuhi and Te Arawa. I grew up in a small place up North called Mangakahia. My favourite thing to do is Kapa Haka and eating lol. I must say Kapa Haka brought me out of my shell. I was a shy person growing up, so doing Kapa Haka made me more confident in singing in public.

I’m currently doing a music development program with Parachute Music learning and up-skilling my knowledge in music and songwriting. From this program, I’ve also had the opportunity to learn piano so I’m officially a piano player now lol.

In 2017 I received an award for Best Emerging Artist at the Māori Music Awards.

My favourite shows that I’ve enjoyed would be performing for our kaumatua (old people/grandfathers and grandmothers) there’s something about performing for them that brings me so much joy and happiness to see them enjoying themselves with the music, it brings me joy.

Please tell us about your music.

'He Iti' Is one of the songs that I like singing, it talks about encouraging our rangatahi to fight for a change in our environment. To encourage them to look after our whenua (land), our moana (sea), our ngahere (native forest) and everything that comes under the environment. That's what it’s encouraging.

What are you working on at the moment?

I haven’t been working on anything at the moment. I’ve just been more focused on writing new content for the coming year!! Hopefully, I'll start producing some new music for everyone next year.

Where can people connect with you?
