Biography
Riki Gooch Pirihi (Ngāti Wai/Ngāti Māhanga Hourua/Patuharakeke) is a freelance multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, academic and sound artist, based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Aotearoa. From composing and conducting the Funkadelic-inspired big band ensemble Eru Dangerspiel and Tuone Conduction Ensemble, to performing and recording alongside a diverse range of artists — Orchestra of Spheres, Mara TK, Crowded House, Recloose, Leila Adu, Fat Freddys Drop, Seven David Jnr, Bic Runga, Connan Mockasin, and Jeff Henderson. He is presently performing regularly with/as Cave Circles, Tuone Conduction Ensemble (as conductor), Orchestra of Spheres, Aja, DJ Oboe, and Clear Path Ensemble.
Riki was the recipient of the 2021 SOUNZ Community Commission. In 2022 he released Mahurangi with Alistair Fraser, inspired by Mahurangi, the ancestral lands of Riki.
