Camryn Nel

Biography

Camryn Nel is a performer and composer based in Tāmaki Makaurau. Originally growing up in Taupō, Camryn began his composition degree at the University of Auckland in 2018 under the tutelage of established New Zealand composers Leonie Holmes, Eve de Castro-Robinson, and Chris Gendall. Camryn has won awards and commendations in various composition competitions including the Douglas Lilburn Composition Competition (2020, 2022), and CANZ Compose Aotearoa Composition Competition. In 2022 Camryn graduated from the University of Auckland with degrees in both composition and economics. Camryn has just finished his honours year studying composition at the University of Auckland. Camryn is the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra's Young Composer in Residence for 2023. Camryn is a frequent performer, freelancing as a percussionist and timpanist with ensembles such as the APO, Manukau Symphony Orchestra, Choirs Aotearoa NZ. Camryn has also sat as part of the NZSO National Youth Orchestra and the Auckland Youth Orchestra since 2021.
