Programme Note
Inspired by a conversation I had with UK composer Parum Vir, May my Shadow Never Depart is based on an extract from the Dhammapada, which is a collection of verses outlining the Buddha’s essential teaching. This particular verse suggests that “joy follows a pure thought like a shadow that never leaves…” I was very captivated by this idea and decided to use it as the basis of this composition for two clarinets. The delay and loops tend to suggest a hovering shadow and I hope that the space and simplicity create a reflective and meditative atmosphere.
Our life is shaped by our mind; we become what we think.
Joy follows a pure thought like a shadow that never leaves.
