“It was the natural culmination of all the resonances – historical, cultural and national – that Norman has created with outstanding flair and skill. The Ballad of Settler McGee richly deserves a permanent place in our musical heritage.’’ Music in New Zealand Summer 1990/91. Originally scored for choir, jazz orchestra, rock group Maori ensemble, audience, concert band and orchestra, the composer has since arranged it as a suite for concert band. It was first performed at the 1990 World Youth Festival.
