SOUNZwrite NCEA Level Three - Lilburn, Ritchie

Kit - education resource

Revised for NCEA Level 3, this SOUNZwrite educational guide contains:

New Zealand’s preeminent composer Douglas Lilburn was himself a student when he wrote his Overture: Aotearoa . Described as a work of “unabashed optimism”, Lilburn noted that it had a, “freshness and exhilaration”.

When writing Three Sea Changes for piano, the composer had in mind the three stages of human life. They are modal in character and suit Grade 6–7 pianists.

Anthony Ritchie’s The Hanging Bulb was, for the composer, a rite of passage partly inspired by Philip Clairmont’s paintings. A continuous movement, divided into four sections, the work incorporates repeated rhythms and passages of lyrical introspection. Hanging light bulbs have been associated with despair and obsession in the world of art and in the real world. They became a significant image to the composer at the time of writing this piece.
