In 1948 violinist Alex Lindsay founded the Alex Lindsay String Orchestra, one of the most important orchestral institutions in this country’s history. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s the orchestra commissioned and performed a great deal of music from New Zealand composers; all works or composers featured on this album have been closely associated with the Alex Lindsay String Orchestra, and this album profiles some of New Zealand’s most popular string repertoire from the 1940 through 1960.

This CD is a digital remastering of the original recordings made in 1960, 1962 and 1963.
