Conductor Hamish McKeich is widely regarded as a rising star in New Zealand and Australia. He works with all the major Orchestras in New Zealand and conducts regularly in Australia and Europe. He studied conducting with world renowned teacher and pedagogue Ilya Musin and also prominent conductors Valery Gergiev, Sian Edwards and Peter Eötvös. McKeich was a participant in the 1996 Kirill Kondrashin International Conducting Masterclass in Hilversum, Holland and was also a finalist of the Gergiev Festival Conductors Masterclass, under the guidance of Professor Ilya Musin and Valery Gergiev. From 2002-2006 he was Associate Conductor of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and is Chief Conductor of the contemporary ensemble Stroma. His recent engagements include the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Metropole Orkest of the Netherlands Radio, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia and a sold out Stroma concert for the New Zealand International Festival of the Arts. He has recently toured China as Music Director of the National Philharmonic Orchestra of New Zealand.
Hamish is a strong advocate of new music, with a special commitment to works by New Zealand composers. More than thirty New Zealand chamber works have been premiered under his baton with the ensembles 175 East and Stroma while, with the NZSO, Hamish has conducted around fifty orchestral works.
