Miriama Young
Biography
Miriama Young composes for vocal, instrumental and electronic media. Much of her work involves interdisciplinary collaboration, and includes works for radio, spoken poetry projects, and interactive electro-acoustic music for dance.
Miriama’s instrumental works continue to be programmed by ensembles in the United States, the UK, Europe, and New Zealand, including recent performances by So Percussion, New Millennium Ensemble, the Nash Ensemble, Stroma, the Yesaroun’ Duo, Strike Percussion, Now Ensemble, and Anemone Dance Theater. Her radiophonic work has aired on Resonance FM London, Radio New Zealand, and NPR (USA).
Miriama grew up in Wellington, New Zealand, and studied music at Victoria University of Wellington. In 2000 she was awarded a Fulbright Award to pursue graduate work at New York University and Princeton University, and she gained her Ph.D. there in 2007. She currently resides in Scotland, UK, a Lecturer in Music at the University of Aberdeen.
Miriama’s music is recorded on the following compilations: Strike’s album New Zealand Percussion Music (awarded ‘Classical Album of the Year 2000’); on the compilation of electronic works New Zealand Sonic Art 2000; and on The Waiteata Collection of New Zealand Music, all of which are available through the SOUNZ website.
Her debut album, Speak Volumes will be released imminently!
