About

Waitaki Reflections was composed in memory of Victor Bartley, a long-time friend and trumpet player. I performed with Vic first in the Auckland Junior Symphony Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra and also at the summer Cambridge Music Schools.

At the centre of the work, a laid-back bluesy trumpet solo provides most of the melodic material for the entire piece. This includes very rapid sections for each section of the orchestra which culminate in a boisterous finale. In contrast, gentle nocturnal sounds as in the opening, reflect on the environment of the Waitaki Boys High School.

Waitaki Reflections was completed on Waitangi Day 6 February 2022 and first was first performed at the Waitaki Summer Orchestra Camp on 14 January 2023.
