About

The Ship of Theseus is a philosophical conundrum or thought experiment which questions whether an object that has had all of its components replaced remains the same object. It expresses a paradox which, when applied to a human being whose cells are continually replaced, questions the sense of a single human identity over a lifetime. This paradox involves a process of gradual transformation – in this piece reflected in the gradual replacement and changes to musical material during the course of the piece.

The immense variety of articulations possible in recorder playing are integral to its expressive timbral arsenal. Here the interaction of recorder and voice communicates extreme musical tensions – from the sweet to the ferociously acerbic.
