About

henki is a music installation prototype for a proposed 2020 project in the UNESCO World Heritage listed islands of Suomenlinna in Helsinki. For this prototype I used the physical structure of the fortress and the many fog horn sounds that are part of the islands life as the starting point for the simplest activation of the site I could imagine.

Five different pitched fog horn samples (unedited) are used as five notes for a large scale outdoor organ, that i named The Soumenlinna Fog Horn Organ. "henki" means breath/spirit in Finnish, and these five declamatory horns play a short requiem to Count Augustin Ehrensvärd (25 September, 1710 – 4 October, 1772) – a Swedish military officer, military architect, artist, and creator of the Suomenlinna (Sveaborg) fortress and the Swedish archipelago fleet.
