Legend speaks of Niwareka, a beautiful turehu woman from the underworld. She came to earth and met Maraora, a mortal man - only to flee from his beatings. Like Orpheus, Mataora travelled down to the underworld to try and win her back. Mocked for having a 'painted-on' moko, he was then given a real tattooed one by Uetonga, Niwareka's father. Having thus done penance for the pain he inflicted on Niwareka, he earned her back. I wrote the song to highlight the message I saw within it, against domestic violence.
