About

The sketches for Phantasie originated in 2005 as a piano work before the textures and colours of strings came to mind. Although conceived as a quartet initially, the opportunity to adapt the work for a larger ensemble with a few edits has provided for a richer and fuller texture to be realised. The slow Lento section which opens the work reflects the melancholy and destruction of the Korean war. The lento eventually makes way for a playful Presto giacoso (joy) before the work finally returns to the initial motifs and mood. The closing Lento is a reflection on the sadness Korea had faced previously and is yet reconciled.
