About

Rather than treating specific predetermined material with a planned trajectory, the crystal funnel of air for two saxophones, which exists in two versions, traces the process of material coming into being, allowing each strand of the material to spontaneously follow its own path. The point of departure is virtually emptiness – a single soft sustained note. This event gradually gains features – dynamic profiles emerge, micro-glissandi and vibrato of various speeds are added, etc. – as it proliferates into a network of related “timbral cells”, with each new version of the material giving rise to multiple variants. Thus in each phase of growth more and more of these cells emerge, which is why in the six sections of the piece, which present six subsequent phases of the growth of the material, the chains of overlapping events become longer and longer, while the material used in these chains becomes increasingly complex. The composition therefore achieves its final form as a result of the evolution of the material itself.
