About

Screaming was written in 1992 when I was a student of John Elmsly at The Auckland University School of Music. I’d just transferred from Victoria University after two years there and was feeling excited by my new start. It received its first performance at the Nelson Composers Workshop of that year by Aneela Pancha at very short notice. It received it first public performance by Mark Menzies at the (09)03 Festival in 2003. The piece is primarily built around the interval of a 9th. I found a tension within the 9th that wasn’t necessarily explosive but had an inherent feeling of repression, of a voice trying to be heard.
