APO organ spectacular interview

8pm, 23 May. Auckland Town Hall

Hamish McKeich CONDUCTOR
Lee Martelli (APO) / Kerry Stevens (Auckland Town Hall Organ Trust) PRESENTERS

Designed to showcase the superb Town Hall organ, six New Zealand composers have written a wide variety of new pieces for the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. From works centred around the organ, to ones that place the organ and orchestra in counterpoint, this promises a special sonic experience.

SOUNZ interviews the composers about their works:

David Hamilton, Chimera
“I was keen to explore the idea of bright percussive and brittle sounds from the percussion, contrasting with the more sustained sounds that the organ, essentially a wind instrument, makes.”

Anthony Young, 13 -Theme & Variations
“I chose the Apostles at the Last Supper for the subjects of the variations because I thought that as a group they would be more widely known by a New Zealand audience. In Italy, many of them hardly figure at all in religious art, and very rarely as a group altogether.”

Robbie Ellis, Relish in Immature Bombast
“ A drum kit speaks faster than the rest of the orchestra (on the beat instead of after the beat), and organs speak slower. Forming a cohesive rhythm section from two instruments with hugely different approaches to time-keeping has taken many hours, but we’ve got there.”

Ryan Youens, Tiraki
“Tiraki is a verb meaning to clear the sky of clouds. In it I have explored the different layerings and textures created between the organ and orchestra, Illustrating the nature and behaviour of the clouds. ”

Ben Hoadley, Huia"This work is named after the beautiful Huia Bay near the entrance to the Manukau Harbour. While not necessarily directly programmatic, this piece evokes a day at Huia. The opening chords suggest the morning mist across the bay, and then the following organ solo, sunrise. "

Chris Adams, Mahuika
“Mahuika, a Maori fire goddess, is awakened into her full terrifying extreme, utilising the full range and capacity of both the Auckland Town Hall organ and the Auckland Philharmonia.”
