The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra has been invited to perform at the Olympic Cultural Festival in Beijing as part of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In this performance in the newly opened National Centre for the Performing Arts, their programme will include operatic arias from Verdi, Tchaikovsky and Wagner featuring New Zealand soprano Deborah Wai Kapohe and tenor Simon O'Neill.

They will be joined by Haley Maxwell (Māori Karanga) in their performance of Gareth Farr's stirring Te Papa, commissioned for the opening of New Zealand's National Museum in 1998.

Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 will also be in the programme conducted by the NZSO’s Music Director, Pietari Inkinen.
