He Pu, He Puoro, He Purakau (A seed, an instrument, a story)

Concert

The result of a longstanding musical collaboration between composers and musicians Horomona Horo and Jeremy Mayall that bridges the worlds of taonga puoro with the world of the orchestra in the form of OCT Ensemble.

Hear the sounds of Aotearoa woven together with the musical textures of the imagination — sounds and the stories that come from the seed of our experiences.

First He Aho Rōreka — a premiere of a new concerto for taonga puoro and orchestra which showcases the instruments of taonga puoro in a new chamber orchestral setting. The second piece is a musical interlude by Horo and Mayall — connected to their duo ensemble work as AWE. The final piece is Akakite Mai Itaau Tua — a further collaboration with award winning playwright Benny Marama which tells the story of his whanua through the lens of traditional stories, narration, and music.

With two concerts to choose from (3 & 4 July), this is an opportunity for the community to connect through a musical performance that transcends boundaries. A musical experience that sits between worlds of experience, to share local stories in a new context. To hear the voices of the land as supported by the traditions of the orchestra moving beyond convention into new sonic territory.
