Voices for Christchurch

Join Maori soprano, Marie Te Hapuku and Christchurch baritone, Kerry Henderson at 7pm on 31 March, 2011 in Voices for Christchurch - a concert to raise funds to help the people of Christchurch rebuild their lives after the devastating earthquake on February 22nd.

Marie and Kerry will be joined on stage by a stellar lineup of artists from around the world, many with a deep connection with New Zealand. These include the Australian bass, Daniel Sumegi, American baritone, Louis Otey, French mezzo-soprano Maria Todaro, Metropolitan Opera tenor Brian Frutiger, and the German pianist Babette Hierholzer. Highlights of the evening will include New Zealand composer Douglas Lilburn’s haunting song cycle, Sings Harry, beautiful traditional Maori songs, and best loved arias and duets from opera, accompanied by pianist Jennifer Peterson. Maori performing artist Ataahua Papa will also offer a traditional karanga (call of welcome) and mihi whakatau (welcoming words).

Voices for Christchurch will bring New Zealanders, Australians and their friends in New York together, and help uplift the spirits of those whose loved ones are far away, rebuilding their lives in the wake of this natural disaster.

All donations will go towards relief efforts in Christchurch. Audience members will have the option of directing their donation towards the Salvation Army Canterbury Earthquake Appeal, or towards the Christchurch Arts Festival, whose aim this year is to offer events at a drastically discounted rate as a healing gesture to the people of Christchurch. Corporate donations can be made through American Friends of Christchurch supporting the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal. Tickets are available now by clicking here.

Special thanks to Sarah L. Smith, and to our partners: Kiwi Club of New York, KEA, NZ Wine Growers, Little Kiwis, New Zealand Consulate, The Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice, and especially to Judson Memorial Church for the generous donation of their beautiful venue.
