The Jubilate Singers, Christchurch’s noted 26-voice chamber choir directed by Grant Hutchinson, presents Illumina, Music of Light. The programme comprises eleven centuries of magnificent choral music, including works by Thomas Tallis, Giovanni Palestrina, Gustav Holst, John Rutter, David Hamilton and Eric Whitacre as well as ChristChurch Cathedral organ scholar, Jeremy Woodside.
A highlight of the concert will be the premiére of a new work especially commissioned for the Festival from New Zealander Gareth Farr. His composition, Illumina, is based on two New Zealand poems: Soft Leaf Falls of Light by the poet, Apirana Taylor and Jenny Bornholdt’s Light. Illumina is scored for soprano soloist, choir and percussion. With the Cathedral artistically illuminated for the occasion, this concert promises to be a delight for the eyes as well as the ears.
