Tim Evans is an emerging composer and vocalist currently based in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland, where they study Composition, Anthropology and Te Reo Māori. Hailing from Kirikiriroa Hamilton, they have a background in instrumental performance, but have since crossed the divide into choral and solo vocal music. They have experience composing for musicians at a range of levels, from beginner to professional. Their works have been selected for performance by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Wellington Youth Choir, among others.
Tim is a bass baritone singer and has performance experience amongst a number of prestigious ensembles, such as the New Zealand Youth Choir and New Zealand Secondary Students’ Choir (winners of the 2022 Children’s Choir of the World). In 2024, Tim also represented Aotearoa in South Korea, singing as part of the Asia Pacific International Youth Choir. These performance experiences inform the way in which they write. Their music for larger ensembles (particularly choral works) is some of their best.
Tim believes in the humanity of music, that the beauty of music making is in the interpersonal connections we make when playing and listening. They relish live performance and see a simple beauty in the composition of contemporary concert works. Often, their music is built on the dissonance of the second - an interval which feels visceral in performance and creates beautiful beating effects when heard live. Rich harmonies and beautiful tonal structure is a prominent theme across all of Tim’s work. As a non-binary person, Tim often introspects and draws musical inspiration from their internal world and personal history. Their music carries a nostalgic tone which is easy to connect with both as a listener and performer.
