About

Lurch was written for performance by the composer at a Dada-themed banquet conceived by Judy Millar for the Auckland Art Gallery Foundation in May 2016. The piece should be performed theatrically and with flair. At the premier, I ran onto the stage through surprised diners and launched straight into the piece! Although the semiquaver figure first stated at the beginning must remain rhythmic and steady, along with the later section marked allegro ritmico, the interjecting passages should be very free and feel like interruptions. The passage marked 'flap' on the last line is produced by emphatic tonguing on the crook opening to produce a percussive effect. The cross headed notes indicate which notes to finger. If you are feeling fearless, the reed can be dramatically tossed aside or into the audience before!
