Programme Note

“Songs and Dances of Death & Desire” is a tribute to the life and personality of Carmen Rupe, Maori transvestite, high-club owner, exotic dancer, drag queen, Wellington mayoral candidate, etc., and also reworks musical snippets from Bizet’s opera, Carmen.

World Premiere for P: Songs and Dances of Desire: In Memoriam Carmen Rupe; APO, soloists, dancer 080313 08 Mar 2013 Performed as part of the 2013 Auckland Arts Festival by the Auckland Philharmonia, conductor Kenneth Young, with Mere Boynton and Anna Pierard (mezzo-sopranos), dancer Jason Moore, guitarist Norio Sato and countertenor, Xiao Ma. Directed by Warwick Broadhead.
24 May 2015 Arrangement for string quartet performed by Anna Pierard (mezzo-soprano), the NZSQ, and Alexander Gunchenko (double bass) at the Jack Body Memorial Concert, at St Andrews on the Terrace, in Wellington.
