Programme Note
Requiem for Bird is my attempt in using colouristic and textural orchestration to create sounds (or rather, my own imagined soundscape) of a tragedy in nature. Despite the clear portrayal of birdsong in the music, the title itself is not intended to suggest a programme or a specific idea. Rather, I hope it would provoke the listener to seek his or her own fantasy-world, conjuring them up in their minds whilst being carried through by the many colours and shades the orchestra can provide. Silences in this piece are vital as well as contrasts of extreme dynamics in order to create a sense of distance.
Requiem for a Bird was recorded by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in September 2007. It was awarded the first-equal prize of the 2007 Todd Corporation NZSO Young Composer Award.
