Programme Note
Fiona Farrell, born and raised in Oamaru, is a best-selling author of short fiction, plays, novels and poetry. The poem Ursula at Parakakariki is taken from her second book of poetry The Inhabited Initial (Auckland University Press 1999). Parakakariki is the name of an old Maori pa site on the Banks Peninsula, and occupies a clifftop spectacularly high above the ocean. The poem was written at the time of her daughter Ursula leaving home.
