Programme Note
One of the award winning piano pieces from the suite Of Things Intangible Grade 5 to 6 difficulty. Tapu is the general name for Maori taboo or prohibitions. It is surrounded by mystery and in the past influenced all aspects of Maori life, providing a form of civil law. When placed on some specific object or area of ground, it could only be removed by special chants and ritual known only to the tohunga (priest).
