Programme Note

This piece was composed in 2000 for a commission from the Waikato Symphony Orchestra.

It has been an extremely interesting exercise to familiarise myself with this piece after so many years – revisiting old thoughts, composition practices, not to mention the memories dredged up in the process. Although quite an early work for me, it is one in which I still have quite a soft spot for. The harmonic and melodic world is for the most part steeped in diatonic tonality, but there are occasional forays into less traditional areas.

During the time that I was writing this piece my father passed away and to a large extent, in saecula saeculorum was influenced by this loss. In essence I think this piece is a reflection of that time which was in many ways an attempt to confront and make sense of my family’s loss.

Dedication:
In memory of Richard Dudley
