Programme Note
“Apteryx – A New Zealand bird, about the size of a goose, with merely rudimentary wings and no tail, called by the natives Kiwi.” (Shorter Oxford Dictionary, Third Edition 1944.) The kiwi, like the composer of this work, is flightless, short-sighted and clears its nostrils often. ‘Apteryx’ was commissoned by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in 2000.
