Alan Wells in The Listener reviewed the premiere of this work in May 1997. “Comedy was indeed to the fore … the moments of deliberate inaudibility, when the protagonist … retreated into his ‘deafness’, were wittily simulated (right down to tinnitus on the violin’s top string.”
