Programme Note
Three short pieces for clarinet and piano. The first piece, featuring short melodic figures on the clarinet answered by the piano, serves as a brief prelude. Number two is a meditation on a rising and falling motif from the late piano music of Liszt, the figure shared between the instruments and elaborated on by the clarinet. The third is based on the triadic harmonies implicit in the final clarinet flourish from the previous piece; the repeating figures gradually ascend until fading into the distance. Three Pieces was written for and dedicated to Toronto clarinetist Rhonda Rindone, and first performed by members of the Taikodo Ensemble, Sumida Triphony Small Hall, Tokyo, in February 2002.
