Programme Note
Lilburn’s Sonatina was premiered and broadcast by American clarinetist George Hopkins who settled in Auckland following the Second World War. During his time in New Zealand George Hopkins became an influential teacher. Dispite its popularity amongst clarinetists Lilburn’s Sonatina, like many classic New Zealand compositions, has suffered periods of neglect and to this day few commercial recordings of the piece are available.
