Programme Note
The title comes from the first piece of the set, which was completed in 1946. The second piece, Prelude, dates from 1950 and the third from 1972, revised in 1981. These superbly evocative pieces belong together yet span different periods within Lilburn’s writing: the early, individual lyricism and the later time when he was writing almost entirely electronic music. Lilburn brings to each of the Sea Changes his breadth and sensitivity, and awareness, from a Pacific perspective, of a universal environment.
