About

Allusions was written for Jean-François Bescond in June/July 2013 as a result of his search for a short piece to play in Assisi. The opening melody is, at its core, based on a harmonic construction spanning a little over two octaves, that is by nature chromatic although often anchored to or built above an E-flat pedal note. The natural agility of the clarinet immediately suggested a wide-ranging angular melodic line outlining an interesting harmonic progression. This idea dominates the movement interspersed on occasions with short bursts of subsidiary melodies with a more confined range. The title "Allusions" is a contemplation on the idea of a single melodic line on its own indirectly forming a harmony in a non-explicit manner.
