Programme note

“Songs and Dances of Death & Desire” is a tribute to the life and personality of Carmen Rupe, Maori transvestite, high-club owner, exotic dancer, drag queen, Wellington mayoral candidate, etc., and also reworks musical snippets from Bizet’s opera, Carmen.


Performance history

08 Mar 2013: Performed as part of the 2013 Auckland Arts Festival by the Auckland Philharmonia, conductor Kenneth Young, with Mere Boynton and Anna Pierard (mezzo-sopranos), dancer Jason Moore, guitarist Norio Sato and countertenor, Xiao Ma. Directed by Warwick Broadhead.
