About

John Rimmer composed this piece in response to a request from Roger Buckton, Director of the College Consort, for a work that would present new sounds for the recorder., The exotic nature of the piece comes from the quasi-oriental timbres; the vibrati and glissandi of the recorders, and the use of oriental percussion instruments. Recently developed techniques of recorder playing: rapid tonguing, individual chords and flutter tonguing also contribute to the effect.

The visual aspects of The Exotic Circle are important. Imagine a circle of performers surrounding the audience in a small, intimate area. In a live performance, individual sound events are heard not only antiphonally, but are heard also coming from all directions.
