This outstanding CD, which won the award for Best Classical Album at the 2005 NZ Music Awards, heralds the beginning of all Lilburn’s complete piano music being made available on recording for the first time. Performances are beautifully interpreted and delivered with conviction by Dan Poynton, well-known as a forthright champion of contemporary New Zealand repertoire. This volume revisits those significant works Sonata (1949) and Occasional Pieces for Piano (1942-73), but also uncovers a handful of small works and the compelling, post-Romantic Sonata for Piano in A minor (1939).
