Waiteata Collection of New Zealand Music Vol. 9 - Douglas Lilburn: Salutes to Poets
CD
The ninth volume of the Waiteata Collection of New Zealand Music is a tribute to the pioneering composer who established Waiteata Music Press; equally it is a tribute to Lilburn’s affinity for poetry and literature. Lilburn admired and collaborated with many contemporary poets, and he too was held in high regard by the literary community. This selection includes a song cycle with poems by one author (two versions of ‘Sings Harry’, with text by Denis Glover); sets of songs with varied authors (two sets of ‘Three Songs’); and incidental instrumental music that is inspired by the work of various New Zealand poets (‘Salutes to Seven Poets’). Performances by Jose Aparicio (tenor), Paul Cibis (piano), Dean Major (violin), Rae de Lisle (piano), Douglas Lilburn (narrator), Roger Wilson (baritone), Gillian Bibby (piano), Peter Barber (viola), Christopher Leach (tenor), Dylan Lardelli (guitar)
Performed by Dean Major (violin), Rae de Lisle (piano), Douglas Lilburn (narrator); Recorded by Concert FM on 5 September 1989, by Major (violin), with Rae de Lisle (piano). This recording received a Mobil Award in 1990.
