Anthony Ritchie (composer) and Jeremy Commons (libretto) have superbly brought Ian Cross’ classic New Zealand novel to the dramatic stage. The opera is appealing and direct, ceffectively communicating the dark and moving narrative of the story.
This recording from the premiere performances is conducted by Holly Mathieson and is accompanied by players from the Southern Sinfonia. The God Boy features Robert Tucker as the unfortunate Jimmy Sullivan as well as Benjamin Kidd, Geoffrey Hughes, Judy Bellingham, Penelope Muir, Goeknil Meryem Biner, Rosemary Tarbotton, Bruce McMillanand includes a chorus of children. This production of The God Boy was directed by Elric Hooper, and has enjoyed successive performances since its premiere by Opera Otago in 2004.
