Night-Piece

Duration: 16' 00" Year: 1987
for piano

  • Programme Note

Night-piece was composed in 1986 with the assistance of an Arts Council grant, and first performed by the composer in April 1987. Sharon Joy Vogan subsequently recorded the work for Concert FM (now Radio New Zealand Concert). The one continuous movement is divided into seven sections, linked by recurring motifs. Five of these sections describe dreams, while the opening and closing sections represent the gradual drifting off to sleep, and waking from sleep, respectively. Rather than being specifically programmatic, Night-piece attempts to evoke strongly-felt sensations and emotions from the sub-conscious mind.

Omarama

Duration: 15' 00" Year: 1987
for trumpet, violin and piano

  • Programme Note

Scored for trumpet, violin and piano, Omarama – Place of Light developed from Preludes of Light for piano, both pieces being completed early in 1987.

The musical structure of Omarama is based on a palindrome of sections which pivot on a central piano solo. In such a form, a lively introduction is balanced by a slow-moving Postlude which features off-stage trumpet. Two contrapuntal sections, two ‘tutti’ sections (the second marked ‘Cosmic Dance’) and solos for violin, piano and trumpet complete the journey through this structure.

In 1986, Omarama, which is situated in the lower centre of the South Island of New Zealand, was the site for clear viewing of Halley’s Comet and other cosmic delights.

Omarama was commissioned by LYSIS with funding from the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council of New Zealand and the New Zealand Composers Foundation. The work was first performed by LYSIS at the University of Auckland on 15 April 1987

This performance by LYSIS was recorded in March 1987 at the Auckland University School of Music.
