9 miniatures for bass clarinet and percussion

  • Instrumentation
bass clarinet; percussion 1: 3 suspended cymbals, sizzle cymbal, gamelan gongs, 3 woodblocks, ting-sha; percussion 2: marimba (large bow required), vibraphone
  • Programme Note

The perfumer’s art has for centuries been described in musical terms: fragrances are talked of in terms of their ‘notes’; the alchemy of creating a new perfume is referred to as ‘composing’; and the traditional perfumer’s tiered workspace is called an ‘organ’. Synaesthetically turning the tables, this set of nine miniatures is inspired by different perfumes – each of them a natural essence. First are the ‘top notes’ of Ginger, Bergamot, and Juniper; then the ‘heart notes’ of Damask Rose, Jasmine, and Chamomile, and finally the ‘base notes’, Patchouli, Frankincense, and Vetiver. The first performance was performed by Justus Rozemond (bass clarinet), Yoshiko Tsuruta (vibraphone and marimba), and Ben Woods (cymbals and gongs). The sounding of the temple bowl marks the transition from one miniature to the next.
