  a furred tail upon nothingness for solo oboe was written for Slovene oboe player Matej Sarc and forms part of the cycle ‘Canto 2’ for wind quintet. The entire cycle was premiered at the 2010 Slowind Festival in Ljubljana, Slovenia by the Slovene wind quintet Slowind.

  This short piece was written as a twenty-first birthday present for clarinettist Esther Smaill. The melodic fragment heard at the outset soon skitters over its own unstable surface, mutates into fanfare-like repetitions, is spliced with momentary cantabile inserts, is interrupted by slow motion signposts, and blows itself out in a final burst of energy.

• Programme Note

  Inspired by the vivid and colourful writing of Salman Rushdie’s East, West short stories, Dancing in the Snake Pit evokes an Eastern flavour with musical ideas based on a scale constructed like the ragas found in Indian music. Dancing in the Snake Pit depicts a snake-charmer, who begins his bold recitative and stirs to life the inhabitant of a deep pit. Slowly the snake awakens from his slumber, and starts to move to the gentle undulating rhythm. Little by little, as the snake-charmer weaves his spell, the snake begins to dance: hesitantly at first, but growing bolder and stronger until its rapid movements coincide with the charmer’s hypnotic and rhythmic dance. Suddenly a bell is heard softly in the distance. The snake grows weary of the dance; he crawls back into the darkness, and sleeps.

• Programme Note

  This work was originally for soprano saxophone and orchestra written in 1996, and was re-arranged for oboe and piano in 2002.

  The first movement was inspired by cartoon characters and has a quirky quality. The middle slow movement is soulful and lyrical. The third movement begins sternly before morphing into a wistful waltz, which in turn changes into a fast, lively tempo.
